CREATIVE WRITING
As a writer, Ben wants to help poets grow and share their craft with the literary community.
1:1 Poetry Exploration: Reflective questions and conversation, line edits and overall commentary, inform craft with supplemental texts (poems, interviews, articles, essays), practice with unique prompts, and converse about creative trajectory, mindset, and endeavors.
Personalized Submission Coaching: Curate a submission portfolio of three to five poems, generate a unique submission plan, discuss expectations, and learn effective strategies for future submissions.
ALTERNATIVE PEDAGOGY
As a teacher, Ben wants to help educators come together as creative allies and critical friends by facilitating thoughtful work spaces to engage with progressive, creativity-based education.
Interdisciplinary Poetry: Through metaphor, voice, setting, character, language, imagery, and allusion, use poetry and creative writing to seamlessly blend English Language Arts skills with other domain-specific content, including but not limited to histories, sciences, maths, technologies, visual arts, psychology, and government.
Multi-genre Motifs: Explore myriad subjects and content (ex. ecosystems, civil rights, diaspora, gender, medicine, computer coding) through fiction, nonfiction, poetry, film, photography, and other media.
Curricular workshops use an inquiry-based approach to designing interdisciplinary units of study, exploring inclusive activities, and noticing student work.
Example: The Road, running from cannibals seen = opportunity for algebraic questions of movement. Also works with psychology, human geography (apocalypse), etc. “Math of…” “Science of…”
Human Geo-based word problems for algebra - based on calculations, write an argument.
Probability questions based on environmental science. Write a fictional narrative.
Planning support facilitates growth, creative thinking, and reciprocal motivation. Based on educator needs, support may include but is not limited to text curation, assessment brainstorming, unit modeling, design coaching, creativity workshopping, calendar mapping, and lesson debriefing.
